We're just about there. Many thanks to all those who have contributed time and funds to make a defibrillator in our phone box on Colwall Green (Colwall 211) a reality.
Special thanks to Heartstart, Colwall Rotary Club, Wings members and congratulations to Sarah Grout for her drive and enthusiasm to get this project off the ground.
Just awaiting an electrician to fit and some final touches to the phone box ... and we're done. Pic to follow!
At
our October meeting we were delighted to welcome Kate Butler and Susie Coleman, best friends who met because of
breast cancer. Beautiful ladies on the outside as you can see from the pic below (where they were chosen to model at the recent London Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show), but truly beautiful people on the inside too. We can't thank them enough for sharing, and being so amazingly inspirational.
Susie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 aged 26, and Kate in 2008 aged 32. Their breast consultant, Steven Thrush, put them in touch with each other for support and what a dynamic duo. They have created the most amazing fundraising organisation www.breastunitevents.co.uk to channel their fundraising for Worcester Breast Unit Haven. They have done the most incredible job raising over £100,000 and making a real difference
Kate and Susie are passionate campaigners and fundraisers for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven, and since 2009 have helped to raise over £100,000 for the breast unit charity.
They created Breast Unit Events in 2014 (www.breastunitevents.co.uk) to channel their fundraising efforts and to help raise the profile of the Unit in the local community.
Wings supported @breastunitevents by
hosting a raffle raising £175. We changed our green website to Pink and
shared details of ‘Know Your Lemons’ … a breast cancer awareness campaign, we made
Dolly Bags and championed our President who is launching a tea to join the
Playtex Moonwalk in May 2018. We dressed in Pink to show our support and solidarity for these two wonderful women and in appreciation for all that they do.
Susie and Kate donated their
speaker’s fee to their fundraiser.
An emotional evening – so many of us
have been touched by breast cancer in some way.
But it’s through awareness campaigns such as October’s that this once
taboo subject is now out in the open and we can offer support and solidarity to
our members and our wider community who may be affected.

What a fabulous celebration of our first year - June 2017
We celebrated our first year in great style - with a garden party at the Colwall Park Hotel followed by a super-glamourous fashion show, courtesey of Promesse of Worcester. Our home-grown models strutted their stuff in the most glorious gowns, looking simply stunning and complete naturals on the catwalk.
Here's a few clips of our celebration:
When our President Jane recovered from her modelling duties she thanked everyone for making it such a great year, thanks all those involved in the party from Promesse for the wonderful frocks, Cecilys for their time in adding a touch of glamour to our models, to the committee for arranging a great night out - and to all our members for making it all happen. A special thanks to Hywell for his great accompaniment while we were enjoying a drink in the gardens, and to Dennis and Sam - for their compering and DJ'ing duties ... three honourary male WI members for the evening.
A truly wonderful celebration of a wonderful year.
Next Meeting Wednesday 17th May NFWI FINAL RESOLUTIONS and Dementia Awareness Week
We will be presenting the NFWI Final Resolutions
Alleviating
loneliness
Plastic Soup:
Keep microplastic fibres out of our oceans
Alleviating
loneliness
This meeting
calls on every WI and the NFWI to work alongside health and social care
providers and their local community to raise awareness of the causes and
impacts of loneliness, thus ensuring better identification of lonely people in
order to be able to offer them the appropriate assistance and support.
Plastic Soup:
Keep microplastic fibres out of our oceans
Microplastic
fibres are shed from synthetic clothing with every wash and are the main
contributors to microplastic contamination of the oceans. The NFWI calls on
Government and industry to research and develop innovative solutions to this
problem in order to stop the accumulation of microplastic fibres in our oceans.
We will be
debating these two crucial campaigns at our meeting on 17th May and
our votes will be taken to the NFWI Annual Meeting to be held in Liverpool in
June.
What a fabulous evening. Our thanks to Hannah Stock for an amazing insight into the world of flying.
Only 3-6% of pilots are female. Does that mean women can't fly? Well that's certainly not true. But why so few pilots? Do girls, unlike boys, not dream of flying? Does the fear of misogeny rather than fear of flying stand in our way? Or is it simply that there are not enough role models.
Whatever the reason, it's changing. And we're delighted to welcome someone who'll inspire not only Wings members, but perhaps their daughters too. Hannah Stock trained as a pilot with the RAF and now flies with British Airways. No mean feat whatever your gender!
Hannah is coming to talk to Wings members at our next meeting on 19th April.
Saving Lives Together

Heartstart Malvern
FREE CPR and Defibrillator Training, 29th March.
Do you know what to do if someone suffers a cardiac arrest?
Do you know how to administer CPR?
Do you know what a defibrillator is, where they are sited, and how to use one?
If the answer to any of those is 'no', then come along to our FREE training session kindly provided by Heartstart Malvern.
Wednesday 29th March, 7.30pm to 9.30pm Colwall Park Hotel
Places strictly limited - please book by email colwallwings@gmail.com
£2 donation secures your place.
In January this year Karen Martin represented WINGS at the launch of Heartstart Malvern 'Saving Lives Together' Campaign.
Heartstart Malvern launched its Saving Lives Together 2017 campaign in January 2017. This campaign could help save around 50 lives from patients suffering a cardiac arrest in Malvern over the next few years.
Heartstart Malvern is aiming to help raise enough
money to buy and install 50 defibrillators for members of the public to use
around Malvern. Defibrillators are small automated machines that can give an
electric shock to try and restart a person’s heart when it has stopped beating.
WINGS would like to be more involved with this fabulous initiative and the committee would like to consider how we can help with fundraising, and indeed raise money for a defibrillator in Colwall Green. If you would like to be involved please contact us at colwallwings@gmail.com. Watch this space for more information. But in the meantime ... get yourself on the FREE training course - 29th March at Colwall Park Hotel.

15th February - we showed the love in true style on Facebook, on Twitter ... and crafted some fabulous green hearts ...

#Show the Love for action on climate change
The
NFWI is a founding member of The Climate Coalition, the UK’s largest group of
people dedicated to action on climate change.
In
February people across the country will show the love for all the things that
are affected by climate change through the power of green hearts.
In
the true spirit of the WI we can craft one, be daft with one, wear one, share
one, grow one, sew one, knit one or kit one.
Each green heart is a moment of
possibility — a chance to begin a conversation about the things we love that
climate change threatens.
Shall
we take part? For our future, our
children’s future and generations to come? We can bake and make green hearts,
and show we want to do something about it.
So what’s it about and what can WINGS do?
-
Why not craft or cook a
green heart or two. Get the kids
involved, meet up with pals?
-
Join the conversation on
facebook and twitter #sharethelove.
-
Share your pics to colwallwings@gmail.com
- we can make a collage to share here on our website
-
Bring your wares to our
next gathering on the 15th February and enjoy your accomplishments
with friends (hopefully there will be a few edible ones!!)
Don’t be shy – WINGS wants to be involved and
with YOU we will be. From 1st
Feb to 14th Feb (ish) get sharing, caring, cooking, booking.
The NFWI have a great campaign underway. Let’s
support it and enjoy it.

What we've been up to:
We are delighted to be welcoming Dawn Marie-Wedlock of ClubDance UK to our meeting on 18th January at the Colwall Park Hotel. Dawn has had the most amazing career in dance and sport & fitness. She'll be coming along to talk to us about the history of belly dancing and also give us a chance to have a go ... so don't forget to bring along a scarf to accessorise your moves ... and a veil if you happen to have one!
Belly dancing is great fun, the music is lively and varied, and a great way to kick start our own fitness campaigns!
Dawn will be starting at 8.30pm after membership renewal ... if you've already renewed then still come along at the usual time of 7.30pm and enjoy a bit of a catch up with fellow Wings!

Join us for an evening of wine, wonderful women and song ... with Doug Watts of 'Find Your Voice'. We'll be carol-ing, chatting and bopping the night away ...
December 2016 ... An idea followed by connection and collaboration. In just a couple of weeks Wings members donated 51 adult coats to donate to the Salvation Army (Malvern Branch) to help keep those in need be a little bit warmer. Thanks to those who donated, to the collection points (Cafe at the Stores and Malvern Party Balloons) and Helen Llewellyn for the inspiration behind it.
